Hey there HoMA members,

Congratulations, you’ve made it to summer! Students, the school year is finally over and you now have the next few months to live it up! Parents, you may be wondering, “How am I going to keep my kids entertained for the next eight weeks?” Or maybe you’re just hoping to make the most of the fairer months while still clocking in hours behind a computer. Well, never fear, this summer the museum has something for everyone. There is a lot going on so to help you pick out some fun things to do, we’ve put together our first ever Member’s Guide to summer.

If you’re anything like me, you plan your day around where you want to eat, and everything else falls into place after that. A fast-growing favorite among museum staffers is Spalding House Café chef Susan Lai Hipp’s steamed Angus cheeseburger—served as a special on Thursdays. They’ll even pack it in a picnic basket for you to enjoy on the lawn while you sip tea and gaze out over the best view of Diamond Head in the city! Pro tip: it’s BYOB with no corkage fee. Call 808-237-5225 for reservations. While you’re up in Makiki Heights, don’t leave without taking a stroll through Plastic Fantastic? to learn more about the impact the manmade material has on our environment—and on art.

Love the outdoors, but don’t want to slather yourself in sunscreen to watch surfers at the beach? Honolulu Surf Film Festival 2016 and HI Sk8 Films Shorts Showcase take the screen at the Doris Duke Theatre in July. Members, get your (discounted!) tickets to the Surf Film Festival opening-night reception here.

Entertain your keiki by bringing them to Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday the third Sunday of each month for a full day of art and activities. In July, artists featured in Hawai‘i in Design reveal how they work, and kids can make prints using Hawaiian plants and learn about the types of surfboards that work best in Hawaiian waters.

Stuck downtown in an office all day? We bring the art to you—take a quick art-break and stroll through our galleries at First Hawaiian Center. The new exhibition by Hawai‘i art legend and Honolulu Museum of Art School alumnus Harry Tsuchidana opens on July 14.

The last Friday of June to September it’s an open-air summer fête at ARTafterDARK—and as a member you get in for FREE. If you haven’t been, you are missing out on the most cultured party in town. The event features live entertainment, art activities, yummy eats and delectable drinks, and there is a different theme each month. Coming up in June is ARTafterDARK: Art in A Time of Chaos. We’ve got The Phoenix Dance Chamber and DJ Jem in the house, so it’s sure to be a fun night!

End the summer by sipping wine under the stars in the museum’s courtyards at August Moon. Pair exclusive wines with signature bites from O‘ahu’s top chefs and see acclaimed Chinese muralist Hua Tunan in action. Purchase your discounted member’s tickets here.

Not a member yet? Join here to get in on the fun! Hope to see you around the museum this summer!
