Laura Hoptman of The New MuseumWe posted the prospectus for Artists of Hawai‘i 2009 last week and hits to the website have skyrocketed. Although the juried exhibition, one of the oldest in the nation, doesn’t take place for nine months, the intense, mammoth planning and coordination that goes into an exhibition like this means that Rui Sasaki is already hard at work laying the foundations. She’s in contact with juror Laura Hoptman of The New Museum in New York hammering out logistics. Last year the submission process moved into the 21st century—all works are submitted online now, through the website callforentry.org. If you’re an artist thinking of submitting work to Artists of Hawaii 2009, what do you think of the prospect of having Laura Hoptman visit your studio (or bedroom or lanai, as the case may be)? She was one of three people who organized “Unmonumental,” the well-received opening exhibition of the New Museum’s new Bowery building. Read the reviews from New York magazine (which calls her one of “the best curators around”) and the New York Times. Are you looking forward to the next Artists of Hawai‘i? Excited by changes to the exhibition or disguntled by them?
