Tonight at 7:30, Anna Biller presents “Viva,” her take on the sexploitation film, at Friends of Film Friday at the Doris Duke Theatre. Anna wrote, directed and designed the costumes and sets for what the New York Times calls “a startlingly pitch-perfect reproduction of the kind of gauzy sex movies from the 1960s and early 1970s that preceded the hard-core revolution.” Oh, she also is the star, playing the sexploited Barbi (that’s Anna in the snazzy headdress). Also in the film is Jared Sanford, another kamaaina who now lives in Los Angeles. Anna’s mom owned the dress shop Sumiko on Pi‘ikoi Street and her father taught painting at UH. I knew Anna back in my UH days and she oozed creativity then. Come to Doris Duke at 6:30 for a $7 plate of ono Da Spot food, a glass of premium wine from Better Brands (your $15 ticket includes one glass), then see Anna introduce her fabulous film. Welcome home a talented island daughter.
