bhutanToday the Hawai‘i Publishers Association held its annual Pa‘i Awards to recognize excellence in the Hawai‘i print media. The Academy is thrilled to see that the Star Bulletin took first place in the “Arts & Entertainment” category for Joleen Oshiro’s piece “Inside Bhutan to find Buddha”—about our landmark exhibition “The Dragon’s Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan.” (Here’s a shot from the opening ceremony in February 2008.) The judges comments on the story: “Far more than an art show review, this is a fascinating account of the trials and tribulations of gathering the artifacts that go into an art exhibition. Oshiro put readers right alongside curator John Johnston as he trekked above 14,000 feet to get a glimpse of some of the treasures that eventually made it into ‘The Dragon’s Gift’ exhibition. Excellent use of anecdotes to help tell the broader story, deftly and evocatively weaved together by a talented writer.” And kudos to Academy staff photographer Shuzo Uemoto whose images accompanied the article.
